Thanhha Lai's Within Out & Back Once again is the story of a young Vietnamese refugee daughter, Ha, and her family unit's escape from Vietnam at the end of the Vietnam State of war. This novel follows the diaspora story of a family being forced to abandon their home, flee their homeland and movement to new place. From the perspective of a ten year old daughter we experience life in Vietnam, a harrowing journey to America and the immense task of adjusting to a completely foreign place, language and culture. While young readers will benefit from learning the historical and cultural context surrounding the novel, they will as well find that Ha's immigration story is quite a familiar one.
